For one, you will get closer to the real exchange rate compared to buying with dollars. As well, you don’t have to worry about getting correct change in a foreign currency. When looking for things to do, check out activities that include sightseeing around the island, including this area.

Don’t Forget to Explore the Other Side of the Island

Many of these restaurants near the port are waterfront, so you can sit, relax, and have a drink and meal with a fantastic view. If you’re not an adventurous eater, don’t worry; much of it is similar to what you’d find in the United States as many flavors have been adapted to please American tastes. One plus is that the food always seems fresher than what’s on the ship or back home. For lunch you aren’t likely to see fine dining, but a fun “beachy” lunch is always tasty. While you may not realize it, Cozumel has a wide variety of great places to eat. Here are some of the places that seem to be most popular with cruise passengers.

Cozumel, Mexico

The only ways to get from the Cozumel International Airport to the Cozumel cruise port -- regardless of the terminal -- is by taxi or airport shuttle. Read on for our breakdown of the Cozumel, Mexico cruise port, including address information, cruise line terminals, services and more. When you travel to Mexico, one of the best ways to enjoy the country is by immersion.

EXPLORE MEXICO

This means you will have to wait your turn and may spend more time in the boat waiting than actually up in the air enjoying your parasailing experience. Chichen Itza (recently named one of the 7 wonders of the world) and Tulum are the main Mayan sites you can see. It amazes me how many people have been to Cozumel and have never been to Chankanaab. It does cost $21 for adults and $14 for children to have access to the park, but once inside you will find enough things for everyone to do for the entire day.

Visit Chankanaab National Park

Beach “El Cielo” is a white sand beach you can’t miss in Cozumel. Take a boat tour to get to El Cielo’s impossibly clear waters. Ideal for snorkeling, starfish gazing, sea turtle sightings, and seeing the area’s beautiful coral reefs. Determine the time of your cruise, and check the Cozumel forecast to see what type of weather is expected. Although chances are you are not heading south in the dead of winter, spending the nights on the water can result in some chilly nights.

So feel free to pick up a bottle or two to enjoy back home, but any margaritas you drink will be from the ship’s bar. That said, we’ve seen little to suggest these sort of problems exist in Cozumel — especially during busy time like when ships are in port. Most violence seems to stay on the mainland and away from the popular tourist areas. Bottled Water Is EverywhereIf you’re worried about drinking the water in Mexico, don’t be. Restaurants and other spots all serve bottled water, and its widely available in stores.

The Playa ferry takes about 45 minutes to reach Cozumel, where you'll be dropped off at the ferry pier in San Miguel. This is only a four-minute drive or 11-minute walk from Punta Langosta, and a 10-minute drive from both Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminal. The roads that do exist in this particular area can't be accessed by car. For something completely different, take part in the Amazing Cozumel Race.

How to Pack for a Four-Day Carnival Cruise to Cozumel

The economy of Cozumel relies heavily on tourism, so the people there will be very glad to help you and make sure you have a pleasant experience. I hope you this article about my experience taking a Carnival cruise to Cozumel has inspired you to book a Mexico cruise. You can also explore my article, 20 Cruises To Take Before You Die, for more inspiration. This is a budget-friendly cruise with very affordable pricing making this trip perfect for group getaways or family travel. Our four-day cruise from New Orleans to Cozumel had a lot of bachelorette parties, birthday parties, and families.

The International Pier, the oldest cruise ship pier on the island, is located about 3 miles from San Miguel (a long but scenic and safe walk). Carnival Corp.'s Puerta Maya, located about 5 miles from San Miguel, acts as a standalone destination, with restaurants, jewelry stores, local craft carts and a beach. We’ve seen some cruises that partner with shopping centers downtown to offer free rides to their shops from the cruise pier.

English is widely spoken by just about anyone on the tourism industry. Meanwhile, U.S. dollars are also widely accepted, as are credit cards (but it’s helpful to carry cash). Tucked inside Hotel Barracuda, No Name Bar is another Cozumel staple. A beach club by day, sports bar by night, this oceanfront club has strong drinks, no cover charge, and free Wi-Fi. This island institution is a must for a sundowner, with a two-for-one happy hour and live music on Thursday through Sunday evenings.

There are souvenir shops, restaurants, shows, and more, including a pharmacy in case you forgot something at home. There’s even a Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville right at the port. Be sure to check out the large Cozumel sign (pictured at the top of this article) for a great photo opportunity with the ships in the background. While San Miguel and Cozumel might have been a sleepy tourist spot decades ago, that’s no longer the case. It offers an amazing assortment of things to do for tourists, including everything from visits to Mayan ruins to snorkeling to diving, to shopping and much more. In town you’ll find everything you’d expect from a city of its size, including supermarkets, restaurants ranging from fast food to fine dining, baseball stadiums, and even a planetarium.

As we said, the island sits just 11 miles across the water from the Mexican mainland and the town of Playa del Carmen. Downtown San Miguel is walkable, but if you want to go further afield, you may need some wheels. Fortunately, cabs are found around the island, but due to demand, prices can get expensive. You can rent your own set of wheels on Cozumel to have a bit more flexibility for getting around.

Enjoy Cozumel's famed scuba diving, even if you're not licensed, thanks to the "SNUBA" experience offered at Chankanaab Park. One of the best benefits of the clear Caribbean waters off the Yucatan is world-class scuba diving. At Cozumel's Santa Rosa Wall, you can see large schools of grouper fish, while the Cancun Underwater Museum reveals a world of sub-surface art. The water in the Cenote caverns located in the inland part of the peninsula is just as clear— just be prepared for the close quarters of the caves. Cozumel weather in December may deter those expecting summer temperatures and clear skies, but this is one of the most tolerable months temperature-wise.
